Signal — A Gen Z News App Designed for Trust & Clarity

A design challenge for LCA focused on reshaping how Gen Z discovers and trusts news in the age of AI.

problem

Gen Z doesn’t trust traditional news. Their feeds are noisy, fragmented, and full of conflicting perspectives. Existing platforms deliver information, but not clarity — leaving young users overwhelmed, disengaged, and unsure what (or who) to trust.

solution

Signal is a mobile-first news experience that uses AI to summarize stories, surface multiple perspectives, and verify facts instantly. The design centers on trust, transparency, and simplicity — giving users a clean feed, personalized categories, and an AI companion that helps them understand any story in seconds.

Signal is a concept news app designed for Gen Z as part of an LCA design challenge. The goal was to rethink how young audiences consume information in a landscape where traditional media has lost trust and AI is reshaping digital experiences. My solution blends a personalized feed, intuitive discovery patterns, and an AI-native “Signal” companion that summarizes, verifies, and explains stories instantly.

Through rapid research, lo-fi exploration, and polished hi-fi design, I created a mobile-first experience that feels trustworthy, youthful, and aligned with how Gen Z naturally engages with content today. The result is a clear, modern news product that cuts through noise, elevates credible signals, and helps users understand the world—fast.

the approach

I started by defining the core user: a Gen Z reader who wants fast, trustworthy context without digging through long articles. From there, I explored design patterns Gen Z already trusts (badges, cards, TikTok-like structure) and combined them with new AI-native interactions. I iterated through lofi flow sketches, built a clear architecture, and then elevated the strongest ideas into polished hi-fi screens.

Early wireframes focused on defining the home feed, designing a swipe-light interaction for categories, and exploring AI’s role in helping users process information. This stage allowed me to validate structure, reduce complexity, and align the UX around fast comprehension.

The final UI uses soft color palettes, rounded cards, a friendly “Signal” AI companion, and an interaction pattern that feels instantly familiar to Gen Z users. Each screen blends clarity with personality, allowing AI to enhance — not overwhelm — the experience.
